How to apply makeup for skin over 50

As we get older, our skin changes — and so should our makeup routine. It has to be a little more clever, and address things like fine lines, wrinkles, uneven texture and tone. With that in mind, here’s your guide to ageless makeup to make you look and feel great in your skin.

1. Moisturise your face and neck

   Always apply moisturiser first. Well-hydrated skin is key to a good base, especially since mature skin tends to be on the drier side.
   
   Rich, greasy formulas don’t get along with makeup. Instead, reach for a lightweight moisturiser that’ll pack a powerful punch of hydration without feeling heavy.

2. Go for makeup with built-in skincare

   Makeup formulas enhanced with skincare actives like hyaluronic acid, vitamin E and aloe vera juice will help nourish, hydrate and plump your skin with every wear.

3. Create a glowy base

   Choose dewy formulas over matte. Foundations boasting high coverage and matte finish can make your skin appear dry and accentuate wrinkles.
   
   Instead, light up and even out your complexion using a lightweight foundation for a lit-from-within glow. Then, take a creamy concealer to cover any imperfections and illuminate your undereye area.

4. Apply light layers only

   Less is more. We don’t want our foundation and concealer settling into fine lines and wrinkles, so apply product in sheer layers. You can always build up for more coverage to achieve the desired effect.

5. Emphasise the eyes

   Add definition to your eyes by applying a coat of lengthening (or volumising — that’s up to you!) mascara to the upper lashes. This will make your eyes look more open.

6. Don’t skip the brows

   A tinted brow gel can work wonders to enhance your features. Simply brush it through your brows to fill in sparse spots and coat each hair.
